About us

Purple Turtle brings together the experience, skills and enthusiasm of Sam Terry and Nicky Thompson, in the creation of courses and workshops that improve well-being, raise self-esteem and boost creativity in participants.

Both Sam and Nicky have many years experience running creative and educational projects for a wide range of community groups. They are both fully trained in safeguarding and hold current DBS checks.


5 facts about Sam

  • Sam has worked for Canterbury City Council for over 10 years running creative, self esteem building projects aimed at improving social skills, celebrating cultural diversity, and increasing peoples sense of wellbeing and positivity.
  • For the last 5 years she has worked for the NHS as an Engagement Officer working with patients to capture their feedback and experience of local services and involve them in service changes and improvements.
  • She has successfully exhibited and sold her own works of art and craft for many years, often custom making special pieces for people.
  • She is an experienced jewellery maker and crafter and makes much of her own jewellery, cards and enjoys 3D projects and embellishment.
  • Her passion is working with women, those with mental health conditions and young people. 

5 facts about Nicky

  • Nicky has worked as a Community Development Officer for Canterbury City Council for over ten years, running creative and educational projects  to improve community cohesion, empower people, and improve quality of life in communities.
  • She is a published poet, with an MA in Creative Writing.
  • She especially enjoys working on intergenerational projects, and with children and young people.
  • She is currently working to become accredited as a Poetry Therapy Practitioner, and has many years experience running creative writing workshops.
  • She is experienced in many types of arts and crafts including creative writing,  artists' books, book-binding, rubber stamping, glass painting, drawing and painting.
